My Experience Making Video Game Music
Synopsis
by D. San
Hello all, I am Danny San. I am a high school student at Armwood High School, and I am currently learning how to use the BandLab program to write a song for a fictional video game. I was assigned this project as a part of my final quarter project where we put all our technical and creative skills to the test. The idea behind this project is to periodically update you on my progress and learning throughout this. Thank you for tuning in. Let’s begin.
Week 1-3:
This week was an introduction to the BandLab program. I use my personal laptop and my smartphone. The process was slow because of the amount of catching up I had to do in my classes, but I had some time to come up with a basic 8-bar loop. There are two instruments: A synth pad and an arpeggio on another track which make for this galactic and mysterious feel. I switched the pads to a piano to see how it feels, but I ended up sticking with a synth for a ‘space-y’ feel. The music is inspired by the works of C418 and his legendary Minecraft: Volume Beta album. I called this simple demo “Collisions” the link is here. The demo unfinished at this state, and I want to continue workshopping ideas on how to add progression and atmosphere to the piece. I changed the tempo of the piece and the instrumentation. The piece now is much more exciting than the previous demo and I feel more ideas can come out of this.
